ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the values of serum 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in predicting disease progression and prognosis of patients with sepsis. Methods: The prospective observational research methods were used. A total of 124 patients with sepsis who met the inclusion criteria were admitted to the Department of Emergency of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from April 2015 to July 2016, including 79 males and 45 females, aged (62±15) years. The sepsis-related organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores of all patients on admission and on the second day of admission and their difference (ΔSOFA) were calculated. The patients were divided into non-progression group with ΔSOFA score <2 (n=101) and progression group with ΔSOFA score ≥2 (n=23), and according to the survival during hospitalization, the patients were divided into survival group (n=85) and death group (n=39). Data of patients between non-progression group and progression group, survival group and death group were compared, including the gender, age, days in emergency intensive care unit (ICU), smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, serum white blood cell count, serum C-reactive protein, and serum procalcitonin on admission, and serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen the independent risk factors of disease progression and death during hospitalization in 124 patients with sepsis, the receiver's operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn according to the independent risk factors, and the area under the curve (AUC), the best threshold, and the sensitivity and specificity under the best threshold were calculated. The patients were divided into high 8-OHdG group (n=35) and low 8-OHdG group (n=89) according to the best threshold in ROC curve of death during hospitalization. The data including the gender, age, SOFA score on admission, SOFA score on the second day of admission, and ΔSOFA score of patients in the two groups were compared. The survival rates of patients within 90 d of admission in the two groups were compared by the Kaplan-Meier method. Data were statistically analyzed with independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and Log-rank test. Results: The gender, age, days in emergency ICU, smoking, complicated with hypertension, complicated with diabetes mellitus, serum white blood cell count, serum C-reactive protein, and serum procalcitonin on admission of patients in non-progression group and progression group were similar (P>0.05). The serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission of patients in progression group was significantly higher than that in non-progression group (Z=-2.31, P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission was the independent risk factor for disease progression of 124 patients with sepsis (odds ratio=1.06, with 95% confidence interval of 1.01-1.11, P<0.05). The AUC under the ROC curve of serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission to predict disease progression of 124 patients with sepsis was 0.65 (with 95% confidence interval of 0.52-0.79, P<0.05), the optimal threshold was 32.88 ng/mL, and the sensitivity and specificity under the optimal threshold was 52.2% and 79.2%, respectively. The gender, age, days in emergency ICU, smoking, complicated with hypertension, complicated with diabetes mellitus, and serum white blood cell count, serum C-reactive protein, and serum procalcitonin on admission of patients in survival group and death group were similar (P>0.05). The serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission of patients in death group was significantly higher than that in survival group (Z=-2.37, P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission was the independent risk factor for death of 124 patients with sepsis (odd ratio=1.04, with 95% confidence interval of 1.00-1.09, P<0.05). The AUC under the ROC curve of serum 8-OHdG within 24 h of admission to predict death of patients during hospitalization was 0.63 (with 95% confidence interval of 0.52-0.75, P<0.05), the optimal threshold was 32.43 ng/mL, the sensitivity and specificity under the optimal threshold was 51.3% and 84.7%, respectively. The gender and age of patients in high 8-OHdG group and low 8-OHdG group were similar (P>0.05). The SOFA score on admission, SOFA score on the second day of admission, and ΔSOFA score of patients in high 8-OHdG group were significantly higher than those in low 8-OHdG group (with Z values of -2.49, -3.01, and -2.64, respectively, P<0.05 or P<0.01). The survival rate within 90 d of admission of patients in low 8-OHdG group was significantly higher than that in high 8-OHdG group (χ2=14.57, P<0.01). Conclusions: Serum 8-OHdG level is an independent risk factor for disease progression and death in sepsis patients with limited ability for predicting disease progression and prognosis of sepsis of patients. The patients with higher serum 8-OHdG level have higher death risk within 90 d of admission.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#We aimed to investigate and interpret the associations between socioeconomic factors and the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension at the provincial level in China.@*Methods@#A nationally and provincially representative sample of 179,059 adults from the China Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance study in 2015-2016 was used to estimate hypertension burden. The spatial Durbin error model was fitted to investigate socioeconomic factors associated with hypertension indicators.@*Results@#Overall, it was estimated that 29.20% of the participants were hypertensive nationwide, among whom, 34.32% were aware of their condition, 27.69% had received antihypertensive treatment, and 7.81% had controlled their condition. Per capita gross domestic product (GDP) was associated with hypertension prevalence (coefficient: -2.95, 95% @*Conclusion@#Hypertension indicators were not only directly influenced by socioeconomic factors of local area but also indirectly affected by characteristics of geographical neighbors. Population-level strategies should involve optimizing supportive socioeconomic environment by integrating clinical care and public health services to decrease hypertension burden.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the early interventions of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on the conversion time of nucleic acid in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and find possible underlying mechanisms of action.@*METHODS@#A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 300 confirmed COVID-19 patients who were treated with TCM, at a designated hospital in China. The patients were categorized into three groups: TCM1, TCM2 and TCM3, who respectively received TCM interventions within 7, 8-14, and greater than 15 days of hospitalization. Different indicators such as the conversion time of pharyngeal swab nucleic acid, the conversion time of fecal nucleic acid, length of hospital stay, and inflammatory markers (leukocyte count, and lymphocyte count and percentage) were analyzed to observe the impact of early TCM interventions on these groups.@*RESULTS@#The median conversion times of pharyngeal swab nucleic acid in the three groups were 5.5, 7 and 16 d (P < 0.001), with TCM1 and TCM2 being statistically different from TCM3 (P < 0.01). TCM1 (P < 0.05) and TCM3 (P < 0.01) were statistically different from TCM2. The median conversion times of fecal nucleic acid in the three groups were 7, 9 and 17 d (P < 0.001). Conversion times of fecal nucleic acid in TCM1 were statistically different from TCM3 and TCM2 (P < 0.01). The median lengths of hospital stay in the three groups were 13, 16 and 21 d (P < 0.001). TCM1 and TCM2 were statistically different from TCM3 (P < 0.01); TCM1 and TCM3 were statistically different from TCM2 (P < 0.01). Both leucocyte and lymphocyte counts increased gradually with an increase in the length of hospital stay in TCM1 group patients, with a statistically significant difference observed at each time point in the group (P < 0.001). Statistically significant differences in lymphocyte count and percentage in TCM2 (P < 0.001), and in leucocyte count (P = 0.043) and lymphocyte count (P = 0.038) in TCM3 were observed. The comparison among the three groups showed a statistically significant difference in lymphocyte percentage on the third day of admission (P = 0.044).@*CONCLUSION@#In this study, it was observed that in COVID-19 patients treated with a combination of Chinese and Western medicines, TCM intervention earlier in the hospital stay correlated with faster conversion time of pharyngeal swab and fecal nucleic acid, as well as shorter length of hospital stay, thus helping promote faster recovery of the patient. The underlying mechanism of action may be related to improving inflammation in patients with COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#Traditional Chinese medicine plays a significant role in the treatment of the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Tanreqing Capsule (TRQC) was used in the treatment of COVID-19 patients in the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center. This study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of TRQC in the treatment of COVID-19.@*METHODS@#A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 82 patients who had laboratory-confirmed mild and moderate COVID-19; patients were treated with TRQC in one designated hospital. The treatment and control groups consisted of 25 and 57 cases, respectively. The treatment group was given TRQC orally three times a day, three pills each time, in addition to conventional Western medicine treatments which were also administered to the control group. The clinical efficacy indicators, such as the negative conversion time of pharyngeal swab nucleic acid, the negative conversion time of fecal nucleic acid, the duration of negative conversion of pharyngeal-fecal nucleic acid, and the improvement in the level of immune indicators such as T-cell subsets (CD3, CD4 and CD45) were monitored.@*RESULTS@#COVID-19 patients in the treatment group, compared to the control group, had a shorter negative conversion time of fecal nucleic acid (4 vs. 9 days, P = 0.047) and a shorter interval of negative conversion of pharyngeal-fecal nucleic acid (0 vs. 2 days, P = 0.042). The level of CD3@*CONCLUSION@#Significant reductions in the negative conversion time of fecal nucleic acid and the duration of negative conversion of pharyngeal-fecal nucleic acid were identified in the treatment group as compared to the control group, illustrating the potential therapeutic benefits of using TRQC as a complement to conventional medicine in patients with mild and moderate COVID-19. The underlying mechanism may be related to the improved levels of the immune indicator CD3

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To analyze urine volume and dietary salt intake assessed by two 24 h urine specimens,to discuss its application value for evaluating population level and individual level dietary salt intake. Methods The subjects aged 18-69 years were selected from four counties in Shandong Province and Jiangsu Province from 2013 to 2014 by using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method. A questionnaire survey was conducted and two 24 h urine with an interval of one day were collected. The differences between two 24 h urine volume, and the dietary salt intake between two 24 h urine were assessed at individual level and population level. Results A total of 1 288 subjects was( 42.3± 14.0) years old,of which 626( 48.6%) were males. The average urine volume of the subjects was ( 1 462±437) ml. The first 24 h urine volume ( 1 427±488) ml was lower than the second 24 h urine volume ( 1 498± 552) ml ( t = -4.439,P<0.001) . The dietary salt intake was ( 9.8±3.3) g,and the dietary salt intake of males ( 10.1±3.5) g was higher than that of females ( 9.5±3.1) g ( t = 3.09,P= 0.002) . There was a significant difference in dietary salt intake among different age groups ( F= 7.57,P<0.001) . The dietary saltintake of 1 136 ( 88.2%) subjects was higher than the recommended level. At the individual level, the participants with the absolute difference with 1g between the subjects’two 24 h urinary salt excretion was 279 ( 21.7%) ,and the participants with the absolute difference with >3 g was 48.5%. At the population level, the first 24 h urinary salt excretions ( 9.9 ± 4.1) g was similar to that in the second 24 h urine and ( 9.7±4.0) g ( P= 0.1021) . The intraclass correlation coefficients between salt excretions in the two 24 h urine was 0.508( 95% CI: 0.451-0.559) . Conclusion The results of this study suggest that 24 h urinary salt excretion can better assess the salt intake at population level, but cannot accurately reflect the individual’s salt intake.

ABSTRACT

Objective PINK1 and Parkin are directly invoveled in the regulation and maintenance of mitochondrial functional morphology. We aim to explore the effect of Wnt2 overexpression on PINK1B9 Mutant Drosophila and its mechanism in this study. Methods The GAL4-UAS system was used to construct the normal control flies(W1118/ + ;MHC-GAL4/+), PINK1B9 transgenic Drosophila model flies(UAS-PINK1B9 /y;MHC-GAL4 / +;Parkinson's disease model of Drosophila melanogaster), the Wnt2 overexpression flies(UAS-PINK1B9 /y;MHC-GAL4 / Wnt2 OE) and the Wnt2 RNAi flies(UAS-PINK1B9 /y;MHC-GAL4 /Wnt2). On the 5th day, the abnormal wings phenotype rate and flying rate of flies were observed. The contents of Ndufs3 proteins were detected by Western blot. The mRNA expression levels of PGC-1α, Nrf1 and TFAM related to mitochondrial metabolism and synthesis were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. The morphology of mitochondria was observed by electron microscopy. Complex I and Complex II function was detected by high-resolution mitochondrial respiratory system. Results Compared with the normal control flies, PINK1B9 transgenic Drosophila model flies showed increased abnormal wings phenotype rate([1.87±0.06]% vs [68.79±0.70]%), decreased flying rate([ 97.51±0.52)% vs(3.95±0.53)%], and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05); Compared with PINK1B9 transgenic Drosophila model flies, the Wnt2 RNAi flies showed decreased abnormal wings phenotype rate[(10.14±1.72)%], increased flying rate([41.83±2.57]%)(P<0.05). Compared with the normal control flies, PINK1B9 transgenic Drosophila model flies showed decreased expression levels of PGC-1α and Nrf1,Ndufs3 proteins, Complex I and Complex II(P<0.05);On the contrary, the Wnt2 RNAi flies showed increased trends compared with PINK1B9 transgenic Drosophila model flies(P<0.05). Conclusion Overexpression of Wnt2 protects PINK1B9 transgenic Drosophila models, which is related to the improvement of mitochondrial function.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the association between 24-hour urinary sodium excretion and obesity in a general Chinese population aged from 18 to 69 years old. Methods 2 400 from 18 to 69 year-old subjects were selected from four counties in Shandong Province and Jiangsu Province from 2013 to 2014 by using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method. Questionnaire survey, physical measurement and 24-hour urine collection were conducted. The relationship between urinary sodium and obesity was analyzed by multivariate linear regression and Logistic regression analysis. Results 2 275 subjects were finally included in the analysis. Obesity rate of the subjects was 19.1%(95% CI:17.4%-20.6%)and 24-hour urinary sodium was (166.4±71.5) mmol/d. The urinary sodium in obese, and central obesity population calculated according to waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were higher than the normal population, respectively (All P<0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that after adjusting for relevant factors, 24-hour urinary sodium was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and WHtR. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that compared to population in the lowest quantile, population in highest quantile had an increased risk of being the obesity, abdominal obesity(calculated according to WC) and abdominal obesity(calculated according to WHtR) with OR(95% CI) of 1.61(1.18-2.20), 2.01(1.39-2.89) and 1.47(1.15-1.89), respectively, after adjusting for age, gender, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, hypertension and diabetes. Conclusions High sodium is independently associated with obesity. Sodium intake is a potential and important risk factor for obesity.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To examine the association between habitual sleep duration and obesity among Chinese adults.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The association of sleep duration and obesity was investigated among 7,094 community-dwelling Chinese adults. Sleep duration was self-reported. In this study, obesity was defined as follows: body mass index (BMI) ⋝ 28 kg/m2, waist circumference (WC) ⋝ 85 cm in men and ⋝ 80 cm in women, and percent body fat (%BF) ⋝ 25 in men and ⋝ 35 in women. Logistic and quantile regressions were employed to examine relationships of interest.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Overall, 6.42% of the participants reported short sleep durations (< 6 h/d) while 14.71% reported long (⋝ 9 h/d) sleep durations. Long sleepers (⋝ 9 h/d) represented a greater frequency of women with obesity [odds ratio (OR): 1.30; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.02-1.67] and high body fat (1.43, 1.04-1.96) than those who slept 7-8 h/d. An association between long sleep times and higher BMI estimations was found across the 10th-75th percentile of the BMI distribution. Among men, long sleepers (⋝ 9 h/d) presented lower risks of developing abdominal obesity compared with individuals who slept 7-8 h/d (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.44-0.99).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Our study suggests that long sleep durations are associated with general obesity in Chinese women but reduced waist circumferences in men. Confirmatory studies are needed to determine the heterogeneous association of sleep time and obesity by gender.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the correlation of suicidal ideation with social support and quality of life (QOL) among college students. Methods: A total of 9 808 college students in Chongqing were surveyed by using stratified cluster random sampling method to investigate their suicidal ideation status; the association of suicidal ideation with social support and QOL was analyzed by multipleregression correlation analysis. Results: The reporting rate of suicidal ideation was 13.04% in our survey, especially high in females (16.39%), art students (15.09%), students with religious belief (15.05%), and studentswith history of suicide attempt (68.64%). The students with suicidal ideation had lower scores in social support, objective support, subjective support, utilization of support, QOL, physical condition, psychological health, economic status, working condition, family relationship and interpersonal relationship with others than students without suicidal ideation (P<0.01). It was also found that the suicidal ideation was negatively correlated with subjective support (r= -0.100, P<0.01), utilization of support (r= - 0.094, P<0.01), physical condition (r= - 0.127, P<0. 01), psychological health (r = -0.067, P<0.01), and economic status (r= - 0.081, P<0.01). Conclusion: College students in Chongqing have a high prevalence of suicidal ideation. Society, family and school should attach more importance to the mental health status of college students and improvement of social support system for college students; comprehensive measures should be taken to prevent suicidal ideation and behavior.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To analyze the status of dietary intake of Chinese adults in 2010.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>In 2010, China Chronic Disease Surveillance was carried out in 31 provinces and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. The survey was undertaken in 162 surveillance sites in the national disease surveillance points system by stratified multi-stage cluster random sampling. The participants were local residents (living in the area for more than 6 months) aged 18 years and above in the surveillance sites. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to measure the dietary intake for 97 187 urban and rural adults aged 18 years and above. After complex weighting for the sample, the average daily consumption for major food was analyzed for different genders and regions.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After complex weighting, the median of cereal, rice and wheat flour intake for Chinese adults was 375.0 g. The median of livestock meat intake was 57.1 g with western areas (85.7 g) much higher than eastern (57.1 g) and central areas (46.2 g) (χ² = 2054.82, P < 0.01). The median of poultry intake was 7.1 g, eastern areas (10.0 g) higher than western and central areas (both 6.7 g) (χ² = 1210.86, P < 0.01). The median of seafood intake was 14.3 g, eastern (15.0 g) much higher than central (14.3 g) and western areas (7.1 g) (χ² = 5603.37, P < 0.01). The median of daily intake for eggs was 21.4 g, western (14.3 g) lower than eastern and central areas (both 21.4 g) (χ² = 1699.11, P < 0.01). The median of dairy product intake was 42.9 g, eastern (57.1 g) higher than western and central areas (both 35.7 g) (χ² = 196.35, P < 0.01). Overall, 52.8% of urban and rural residents did not meet recommended amount of fruit and vegetable intake. The rate of inadequate intake of fruit and vegetable was higher in rural (55.7%) than urban areas (46.1%, χ² = 929.43, P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The adult intake of cereal category foods tended to decline in 2010, and the intakes of vegetable and fruits, fishery products as well as dairy products were evidently deficient and regionally varied.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To understand the prevalence of participation in leisure-time physical activity, and sedentary behaviors among Chinese adults.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Data from Chinese Chronic Disease Surveillance (2010) was used. Among adults aged 18 years old and over, the information on frequency and duration of occupational activity, house chores, commuting and leisure time activity was collected by an interview with Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). The time spent on watching TV, reading, using computers or playing games after work was also surveyed. This present study only analyzed the percentage of participating in leisure time moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity at least 10 minutes three days per week and the time spent on TV, reading, using computer and playing games during after hours among Chinese adults of 98 649 subjects.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>11.9% (95%CI: 10.5% - 13.3%) of all adults took part in leisure time moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity at least 10 minutes for three days per week, with-group the percentage highest among age-group 18 - 24 (15.6%, 95%CI: 10.5% - 13.3%) and lowest among age 25 - 34 (9.9%, 95%CI: 8.0% - 11.7%) and 75 years old and over (9.9%, 95%CI: 8.2% - 11.6%) (P < 0.01). The age related change showed a double-peak curve. The percentage was higher in male (13.1%, 95%CI: 11.6% - 14.6%) than in female (10.6%, 95%CI: 9.3% - 12.0%) (P < 0.01). Among the populations engaged in diverse occupations, the lowest percentage was detected among those in farming, forestry, husbandry and fishing (4.2%, 95%CI: 3.4% - 4.9%). Higher percentage was found among the residents lived in urban areas (19.9%, 95%CI: 17.4% - 22.5%) than in rural areas (8.2%, 95%CI: 6.7% - 9.8%) (P < 0.01), and higher in the east area (14.8%, 95%CI: 11.9% - 17.6%) compared to that in central (9.7%, 95%CI: 8.1% - 11.3%) or in west areas (10.3%, 95%CI: 8.4% - 12.3%) in China (P < 0.01). Furthermore, (2.7 ± 2.0) hours per day was spent in sedentary behaviors, such as watching TV, reading, using computers or playing games during after hours. Those aged 18 - 24 years-old spent most time (3.8 ± 2.6) hours per day in sedentary behaviors and the time reduced with age (P < 0.01). More time on Sedentary behaviors were taken by male (2.9 ± 2.1 hours per day) than by female ((2.6 ± 1.9) hours per day) (P < 0.01), with more hours spent in urban ((3.3 ± 2.2) hours per day) than that in rural ((2.5 ± 1.9) hours per day) (P < 0.01). No difference was detected among the residents lived in east ((2.9 ± 2.1) hours per day), central ((2.7 ± 2.0) hours per day) and west area ((2.6 ± 2.0) hours per day) (P > 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The percentage of taking part in moderate and vigorous activity during leisure time was generally low. Average time spent in after hours sedentary behaviors was long.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the clinical effects of Reduning Injection on ordinary hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in children.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>76 children with confirmed diagnosis of HFMD were randomly assigned to 3 groups by the center randomization method, i.e., the Western medicine group (WM, 24 cases, treated with Ribavirin Injection or antibiotics), the Reduning Injection group (RI, 26 cases, treated with Reduning Injection), and the combination group (26 cases, treated with the combination of Reduning injection with Ribavirin Injection or antibiotics). The therapeutic course lasted for 3 to 7 days. A 3-day follow-up study was performed by the end of the treatment. The blood routines, the liver function, the renal function, the fasting blood glucose, the pyretolysis effect initiating time, the time for the body temperature recovery, and the rash subside time were observed in the three groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1) Of 76 patients, 13 dropped out, with the final effective case being 63. Of them, there were 19 cases in the WM group, 22 in the RI group, and 22 in the combination group. (2) Compared with the WM group, the pyretolysis effect initiating time and the time for the body temperature recovery were both significantly shortened in the RI group and the combination group (P<0.05, P<0.01). (3) There was no significant difference in the rash subside time among the three groups (P>0.05). But there was shortening tendency in the RI group and the combination group. (4) One child in the RI group dropped out from this study due to a mild rash, and no adverse drug reaction occurred in the other two groups.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>RI had some advantages in treatment of HFMD such as fasting pyretolysis effect initiating time, shorter time for the body temperature recovery, higher safety. Besides, it also could accelerate the subside of skin rashes to some extent.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the therapeutic effect of Xiaozheng Rongmu Powder (XRP) for the treatment of progressive CCl4-induced liver cirrhosis in rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Rat liver cirrhosis model was established by subcutaneous injection of 50% CCl4-olive oil 2 mL/kg twice a week for 12 weeks. Experimental rats were divided into the control group treated by saline and the two treatment groups, treated with XRP and Xiaochaihu Decoction, respectively, with the treatment starting from the 9th week of modeling. Rats were sacrificed at the terminal of experiment, the death rate, character of ascites, liver histological changes, liver function, mRNA expression of hepatocyte mitosis and the liver fibrosis associated markers in rats were observed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>At the end of the 8th week of modeling, serum levels of ALT, AST and TBil were increased, and Alb decreased significantly in rats (P < 0.01), cirrhosis formation with ascites could be seen in all rats. Meantime, levels of vascular smooth muscle alpha-actin, transforming growth factor-beta1, collagen I A2, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, tissue inhibitor of melalloproteinase-1 mRNA increased, while matrix melalloproteinase-13 mRNA were decreased significantly (P < 0.01), with visible liver proliferation to some extents. Further changes of above-mentioned abnormalities and clear suppression of hepatocytes mitosis were found in the modeled rats at the end of the 12th week. As compared to those occurred in the control group, changes in the XRP treated group were significantly milder at the corresponding duration, and clearly active hepatocytes mitosis was shown.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>XRP, a Chinese drug with the effect of dissolving phlegm, removing stasis and supplementing qi, could reverse the progress of cirrhosis formation induced by CCl4, and it brings potential new hope for the treatment of advanced cirrhosis by Chinese medicine.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the causes and therapeutic methods of compartment syndrome following radial artery cannulation in the left forearm. Methods The data(including puncture pin type, puncture frequency, onset time and INR) and therapeutic methods(including using manicol, cold compress, fasciotomy, dactylolysis and dermatoplasty) of 6 patients were retrospectively analyzed, which had compartment syndrome after radial artery can- nulation in the left forearm. Results The type of puncture pin and puncture frequency attributed to this disease to some extent. After therapy,4 patients recovered completely.2 patients underwent fasciotomy, and Volkmann syn- drome happened in 1 patient, dactylolysis happened in the other because of necrosis in the left thumb and finger.Con- clusion Compartment syndrome may be avoided by correct selection of puncture pin type and no repeated punctur- ing,and early diagnosis and therapy are important for fine prognosis.
